Winnie-the-Pooh was named after a real black bear named Winnipeg.

In 1914, the bear cub was purchased from a hunter for $20. Afterward she was treated and sent to the London Zoo where she was named Winnie. Christopher Robin, A.A. Milne’s son, saw this bear in 1924 for the first time. He got so impressed with the bear that he changed the name of his teddy bear from Edward the Bear to Winnie-the-Pooh. This became his father’s inspiration to write his first book about Winnie-the-Pooh.

This means that the real bear became the prototype for one of the most popular fictional characters of our time.
